It is spring here in Upstate New York and with the warmer weather, comes a host of unwanted pests, rodents and bugs. It is extremely important to be proactive to ensure you do not have an outbreak of nuisance wildlife that might include raccoons. These furry creatures can become a nuisance if they attack your property. Not only do they damage items around the house, they can also be seriously dangerous.
A raccoon outbreak is manageable; it only needs some care from the homeowner’s side. Perhaps the best method to keep raccoons out of your property is by making sure no food or other attractant is left in the open. This means that trash cans and garbage needs to properly disposed of and covered with a lid. Emptying your garbage frequently is also a good idea because piled up garbage can leave a smell that raccoons can easily pick up. Raccoons have a favorite food as well – meat. Make sure no meat products are discarded directly in your trash can.
You should also take measures to ensure no leftover food or barbeque is lying in your lawn. Food attracts raccoon, be it in a trash can or in the open. Items that lure these nuisance wildlife need to be held in check immediately.
Other ways to keep raccoons away is building a fence around your lawn. Raccoons don’t really know how to climb so they won’t put in too much effort to climb your fence.
Repellent products that can be used to keep these pests away include making a scarecrow, using ammonia and predator urine, and even the sound of a gunshot!
Finally, if a raccoon does manage to enter your lawn, you can trap it with a DIY trap and release it away from your house.
